I am posting this a couple of months late.
My MC18 crankshaft has been pressed back together.
I paid Wob $80 for the 2 big end bearings and owe him a further $200 for pressing the crank together.

Hey there, I've been following your blog for a while and it's a very insightful place to gather info on the MC18.
ReplyDeleteI own a MC18 R5K and I'm facing the problem of a worn out crankshaft. I've been quoted by my mechanic locally for a bottom end rebuilt and it's way out of my budget (after conversion, it's around NZ$3300). I'm still a starving student. And there's the issue of the availability of a brand new MC18 crank.
Seeing that you've managed to get your crank pulled apart and rebuilt, other than the obvious replacement of the bearings and seals, are there any other things to take note of? And I've been told that once a crank has been rebuilt with new seals, it has to be sent for balancing. It would be great to hear back from you.
Cheers.
When the crank is pressed apart the crank pins (that the conrods run on)and the conrod big ends have to be inspected by someone who knows their stuff. If they are OK, then you are lucky and can just press the crank back together with new bearings, thrust washers and seals.
ReplyDeleteWhen the crank is pressed back together, it is necessary to line up the different crank webs exactly (using a lathe or similar) as you press the different bits together. That's it. It is not necessary to then get the crank "balanced" as you say.
Pressing an NSR250 crank back together is a tricky job that needs to be done by an experienced person with the right equipment.
This reply is 2 years late, but, thanks for sharing mate. Over here, I'd be damned if I managed to find someone who would be able to do it.
DeletePS. It's great to see updates on your MC18. Seems like it's making more progress than mine.
